William Bunn (see death certs)

1857 -1890

William was baptised at Bulmer on February 1st 1857

William spent his youth in Sandy Lane, Bulmer. His father, James was a stockman and later a shepherd, living at Shepherds House, and working for the Auberies. Also living with William were his mother Ann, and younger siblings: Samuel, Walter, Sarah and Emily.

William started work as an agricultural labourer and then became a carpenter.

He married Ellen, probably in the early 1880s, but Ellen died in 1887 aged just 25years.

William died in 1890 aged 33.

What tragedy befell them that they died so young? The most likely causes of their early deaths were childbirth and agricultural accident. But there is no mention of an accident in the local press, and the wording on his grave implies natural causes. William’s younger sister, Emily, suffered from consumption - a contagious and common cause of death at the time.

In ever loving memory of William Bunn who fell asleep

March 27 1890 aged 33 years

also of Ellen Mary, his wife

who died January 25 1887

aged 25 years

interred in Sudbury cemetery

Then when on earth I breathe no more

The prayer oft mixed with tears before

I’ll sing upon a happier shore

Thy will be done
