On leaving school he worked in Yorkshire and during the Great War he served in France as part of the Machine Gun Corps and 18th Hussars.

Alfred later moved back to London working in the construction industry.  In London he met Florence Amelia and they married in 1929, living in Hackney and Bethnal Green. They had a son, Alfred.

Alfred senior moved from London and returned to Henny in 1940  where, for the next 21 years he worked as a stockman on Grove Farm. He played darts at the Henny Swan, and was in the Home Guard from January 1941 until December 1944.

In 1962 Alfred and Florence moved to Bulmer where Alfred was assistant caretaker at the village school and a member of the Bulmer Friendship Club.
